Street tacos are small, simple and packed with flavor. They grew out of the taquerias and street carts of Mexico, where they're made fast and eaten on the spot.
The tortilla
Street tacos are usually served on small corn tortillas, about four to five inches across. Many places stack two tortillas per taco so it holds together.
Common fillings
- Al pastor: marinated pork, traditionally cooked on a vertical spit and often served with pineapple.
- Carne asada: grilled, chopped beef.
- Carnitas: slow-cooked pork that's crisped before serving.
- Pollo: seasoned, grilled chicken.
Classic toppings
A traditional street taco keeps toppings simple: chopped white onion, fresh cilantro, a spoonful of salsa and a squeeze of lime. That lets the filling shine.
How to eat one
Pick it up, fold it slightly and eat it while it's warm. Street tacos are small, so most people order a few.
